Greybeards speak in brackets (parenthetically, that is) and who can blame them? There is – after all – so much that needs saying (or, rather, explaining). In lecture halls, students take angry notes (the writing is furious, I mean). Pens and brains are baffled by the complex grammar – insertions, additions – and asyntactical faces throw question marks at the lectern. But students, young ones, be patient with the greybeards: there is after all so much more to be said. |
